Presenter, Sheila Forsyth, Director, Canadian Council on Environment and Food Policy

Dr. Forsyth wrote, advised and negotiated the Naturally Occurring Microbial Pest Control Guidelines and developed the first version of the Genetically Modified Pest Agents Guidelines under the Canadian Pest Control Products Act. She has represented the Canadian government to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in discussions on requirements for the assessment of biotechnology products.  She chaired the OECD Working Group On Biotechnology for several years.

She also has managed the development of the biotechnology regulations under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Dr. Forsyth was the biotechnology advisor on the Canadian team that developed the Convention on Biological Diversity. Sheila Forsyth negotiated for both the Canadian government and for non-governmental organizations participating in developing the Canadian Biosafety Protocol for Living Modified Organisms.   In addition, she has prepared an analysis for farmers' association on the "Terminator" gene technology as well as written a farmers' guide to biotechnology..
